Memorial Day Taku Harbor Rendezvous

Taku Harbor RevelryMemorial Day Weekend, the beginning of summer, and the first SEAS cup overnight set of races.  Traditionally, one of the best attended races, it has something for everyone.  The first of three races begins 10:15 at Marmion Island, and proceeds up the channel, into Stephen's Passage and finishes at Graves Point.  This race is generally and upwind battle up the channel, with a close reach past Pt Arden, finishing with some tacking to Graves Point.

The boats then tie up in Taku Harbor, for a night of revelry.

The start time for Sunday's race is to be determined by the skippers and crew based on exactly how much revelry was had the night before.  The fun-o-meter can be read by determining how late the Sunday race begins.

Sunday, the boats will begin at Graves Point and sail south to Twin Points on Admiralty and drag race back.  This race is usually one of the best for wind and water, with a long beat, followed by an incredible run.  Of course, the wind is fickle and might not cooperate.

Sunday evening, of course, the boats will overnight in Taku Harbor again, after checking their crab pots, and sailing the race.  Taku Harbor is a great place to stay with two docks, lots of fishing and crabbing opportunities.  The head of the bay has two salmon streams so bears are known to be around, and whales are frequently in the mouth of the bay.

Monday morning starts with a hearty breakfast, and the boats motor out to Graves Point for the race home.  This race finishes at Sheep Creek, and is generally a downwind run, so lots of spinnakers and speed.

This weekend's weather in Stephen's Passage looks to be light winds with a little precipitation.

As always, remember to attend the skippers meeting at the Breakwater bar at 5:30 PM on May 22.  And to read the SEAS Instructions.  And the printable Taku Harbor Race Rules.
