Sun and Fun in the Wind
This Memorial Day Weekend Southeast Alaska Sailing sponsored three sailing events which turned out to be both challenging and rewarding to the participants. The opening race brought out the largest fleet in years.

The course to Taku Harbor was a windward grind with four of the 6 boats finishing. The evening gathering was short one boat, Tango, returning to Juneau with commitments to home and business. The Twin Points race on Sunday brought out Surprise, Haiku, Loa’a Nalu and Optiminium to a morning of sailing in a light North wind, which turned to a steady southerly late in the race. A challenging finish for the leaders resulted in one of the first fouls in the history of the Seas Cup. The building of the south breeze pushed Loa’a Nalu and Optiminium, at hull speeds, finishing with notable corrected times. The final leg home to Juneau on Monday was a scorcher. Light winds plagued the fleet in the Pt. Arden doldrums with Haiku and Surprise escaping under spinnakers and Optiminium making a impressive ghosting move to pass Loa’a Nalu and entering the channel miles ahead of her for a pleasant spinnaker run home. |
