AMSEA Sailboat Safety Course

Event:
When:
Saturday, April 25, 2015 - 12:00 to Sunday, April 26, 2015 - 16:00

Over the weekend of April 25th and 26th, SEAS will be hosting an AMSEA (Alaska Marine Safety Education Association) Sailboat Safety Course exclusively for SEAS members and associates.

Whether you’re a salty sailor with several Admiralty Races under your belt, a Southeast mariner born & bred on deer hunting and camping trips, or brand-new to sailing, this course will cover the fundamentals of boating safety that you can take with you on any off-shore excursion around the world.

The course will be held in the UAS Vocational Technology building, located between Aurora and Harris Harbors.  Class on Saturday will run from 12:00 until 18:00, and be entirely in the classroom.  Topics covered will include:   emergency response, survival kits, cold water survival, immersion suits, PFDs, flooding, and fire.  The Sunday class will run from 12:00 until 16:00, and will be a combination of classroom instruction and outdoor drills onboard club boats.  Topics will include: signals and flares, emergency assignments, and safety orientation and drills.

In addition, there will be a trip to Sandy Beach after the Saturday evening course to set off flares.

Students successfully completing this training earn a USCG-accepted Emergency Drill Conductor certification.  Training also meets the PIYA safety requirements for the 2015 SEAS Spirit of Admiralty Race.  Although this training is not required for the Spirit of Admiralty Race this year, it will meet the requirement in 2016.

It is sure to be a fun and informative weekend.  No matter how much sailing experience you have, this course will be a valuable opportunity for safety education and practice.
