AIR Part 6 - Heading North
Leg 4 –Baranof Warm Springs to Basket Bay
Start Time: Thursday June 26, 2014--0900
Start: An imaginary line between the Committee Boat and, within ½-mile of, the navigational mark at Baranof Warm Springs Bay, bearing 250M.
Distance: 35.4 nautical miles
Course: After the start, proceed north through Chatham Strait.
Finish: An imaginary line bearing 250M, and within ½-mile, to the southernmost tip of the peninsula on the north side of the entrance to Basket Bay.
Anchorage: North winds - The northwest end of Basket Bay, ~1.5 miles from the finish.
Severe SE winds – proceed north in Chatham Strait, rounding Passage Pt & anchoring in Trap Bay within Tenakee Inlet, ~8.5 miles from finish.
A new port in 2012, Basket Bay is a small but deep inlet on the east side of Chichagof Island which opens to the southeast, and can be a rough anchorage in southerly weather. It is gorgeous, with a water-carved karst arch in a creek-mouth, and a rumor of old petroglyphs in the area. But if the weather is bad enough we can’t stay here, it is a quick run a little further north to the shelter of Trap Bay in the mouth of Tenakee Inlet.
